175th Community Celebrations

2012 marked the 175th Anniversary of the founding of Coromandel Valley and a community committee oversaw an extensive calendar of events to celebrate the occasion.

The Coro Alive! 175 Organising Committee was an official subcommittee of the Coromandel Community Centre.

Committee Convenor and 4th generation Coromandel Valley resident Trevor Conlon believed celebrating 175 years of European settlement of Coromandel Valley, all that preceded it and what is yet to come was worthy of broad community participation.

The year-long celebration provided an opportunity for sharing information about the area’s heritage and encouraging a strong community spirit. Community groups and individuals were actively involved in arranging functions and events that ran from January through until the finale on 18th November 2012.

A key focus was on the involvement of younger people as they will be the future custodians of the heritage of The Valley and guides for its future.

Objectives

  1. To celebrate Coromandel Valley and the people it has served and continues to serve.
  2. Stage functions and activities that promote interest and knowledge in the history and heritage of Coromandel Valley in a context of community celebration.
  3. Engage participants, particularly children, in the values of community and the opportunities available from life in Coromandel Valley.
  4. To collect, collate and store written word and images from and about the district.
  5. Assemble family histories and information about the people who have made Coromandel Valley what it is today.
  6. Provide reasons for families, friends and past residents of Coromandel Valley to visit.
